Tanjiro Kamado
Voices of: Natsuki Hanae, Satomi Satō (child)(Japanese); Zach Aguilar, Allegra Clark (child) (English)
The main character, Tanjiro Kamado (竈門 炭治郎, Kamado Tanjiro) is the first son of a charcoal seller. His entire family was slaughtered by Muzan Kibutsuji while selling charcoal, with only his sister Nezuko surviving. His goal is to find a cure for her and make her human again, and to that end he decides to join the Demon Slayer Corps. He first trained under Sakonji Urokodaki, learning the “Water Breathing” sword style (水の呼吸法, Mizu no Kokyū-hō), but later he began using the Hinokami Kagura technique (ヒノカミ神楽, lit. “Dance of the Fire God”) of his family, which itself is based on the original breathing style, Sun Breathing (日の呼吸, Hi no Kokyū) merging the two to create a more durable fighting style. His skull is extremely thick and his headbutts are often used as gags throughout the series. He is a big-hearted boy and often feels sympathy for demons and their victims. His endless optimism and simple nature make people often enjoy his company, but at the same time, it also puts him at odds with some personalities. Tanjiro has a highly developed sense of smell that allows him to track down demons and escape their attacks; it also allows him to understand people’s real emotions. Tanjiro’s sword is black in color, sometimes turning crimson red and becoming much stronger when combined with Nezuko’s “Blood Burst” technique, which he later learns to perform without her help. Although he eventually avenges his family in the final battle, losing an arm and an eye while mortally wounded, both are restored when Muzan attempts to turn him into his successor by turning him into a demon, but through the efforts of his friends, he manages to return to human form.
Nezuko Kamado
Voiced by: Akari Kitō (Japanese); Abby Trott (English)
The daughter of a charcoal seller and Tanjiro’s younger sister, Nezuko Kamado (竈門 禰豆子, Kamado Nezuko) is the cute but strong female demon protagonist. Despite Muzan’s assumption that he killed them all in his attempt to spawn a sun-resistant demon, Nezuko survived as a demon, her mind mostly gone. However, she retained enough of her memories not to kill Tanjiro. Thanks to two years of hypnotic conditioning by Urokodaki, Nezuko considers all humans as her family and will ruthlessly attack any demon that threatens them. Instead of consuming human flesh, Nezuko recovers energy from sleep and tends to become unconscious for long periods of time after overworking herself. She is unable to speak and must wear a bamboo gag to keep from biting. Nezuko has several powers, including regeneration, superhuman strength, rapid growth and shrinkage, and a blood demon technique called “Blood Burst” (爆血, Bakketsu) that causes her blood to burn once it leaves her body. Tanjiro usually carries it in a bamboo basket until it develops the ability to survive exposure to the sun, and Muzan targets it soon after. Nezuko’s spirit and humanity were finally restored in the final battle against Muzan, and it is implied that she helped Tanjiro recover from his demonic transformation when his brother ingested her blood, which contains antibodies for Muzan’s demonic blood.
Zenitsu Agatsuma
Voiced by: Hiro Shimono (Japanese); Aleks Le (English)
An extremely cowardly boy who was forced to join the Demon Killer Corps around the same time as Tanjiro to pay off his debts, Zenitsu Agatsuma (我妻 善逸, Agatsuma Zen’itsu) trained in the “Thunder Breathing” style (雷の呼吸法, Kaminari no Kokyū-hō) of the former Thunder Hashira, but was only able to learn the first technique, and because of this he often puts himself down, despite being talented. He joined Tanjiro for a mission and since then he followed him, partly because of his infatuation with Nezuko, but also because he recognized his honesty and kindness. His loose personality bothers him at first and he can only fight when he is unconscious or asleep, but he eventually learns to put his fears aside and act when necessary, to the point of developing a new and exclusive thundering technique. Zenitsu’s sword is colored gold. He has a very keen sense of hearing which allows him to distinguish a person’s true character by the sound of their heartbeat and to track down demons.
Inosuke Hashibira
Voice of : Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Japanese); Bryce Papenbrook (English)
A young boy who was not raised by his mother Kotoha Hashibira, but by wild animals. Inosuke Hashibira (嘴平 伊之助, Hashibira Inosuke) uses a self-taught style called “Beast Breathing” (獣の呼吸法, Kemono no Kokyū-hō), as well as two jagged swords in combat. When he receives new swords, he knowingly has them serrated to suit his preferences and fighting style (much to the anger of the smith). He is brash and prone to react violently, and although he appears weak, he has proven himself in battle time and time again. He is extremely muscular and robust, which contrasts with his strangely effeminate face, which he normally hides under the head of a boar. When he first meets Tanjiro, he treats him as an enemy, but they quickly become friends as they fight together. He often challenges Tanjiro to competitions that are accepted in good spirits. He took the test at the same time as Tanjiro and Zenitsu, and was apparently the first to pass. Inosuke’s swords are blue-gray in color. He has a heightened sense of touch, being able to locate his enemies by feeling the vibrations in the air.
Kanao Tsuyuri
Voice of: Reina Ueda (Japanese); Brianna Knickerbocker (English)
A demon slayer who joins at the same time as Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Genya, Kanao Tsuyuri (栗花落 カナヲ, Tsuyuri Kanao) is the protege of Shinobu Kochō, the current Insect Hashira, and is trained as Tsuguko, or successor of Hashira – however, that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s a bug stalwart or has the same “breathing technique” as Shinobu. She uses the “Flower Breathing” (花の呼吸法, Hana no Kokyū-hō) style and is a very skilled fighter, but has difficulty functioning without being told directly what to do. She grew up in a poor and abusive home and was sold into slavery, which caused her to bottle up her emotions to cope. Even after being rescued and picked up by Shinobu and Kanae, she would never have done anything without orders. So Kanae gave her a coin toss that she could use whenever she had trouble making decisions. She relies heavily on her coin toss to make decisions until Tanjiro becomes friends with her, which convinces her to use the coin less often and stick to her own intuition. It’s also implied that she might have feelings for Tanjiro, to the point of risking her life to help save him when he was turned into a demon. Later in the series, she and Tanjirou are shown to have had descendants, thus confirming her romantic relationship with Tanjirou. Kanao’s sword is colored pink and her heightened sense of sight allows her to easily dodge enemy attacks, but she grows tired from overusing this ability during her fight with Doma,
Genya Shinazugawa
Voice of: Nobuhiko Okamoto (Japanese); Zeno Robinson (English)
A Demon Slayer who joins at the same time as Tanjiro and Zenitsu. Genya Shinazugawa (不死川 玄弥, Shinazugawa Gen’ya) is a tough and rude individual, obsessed with nothing but killing demons. His personality subsequently changes after fighting alongside Tanjiro to save the village from the Hidden Swordsmen. Unlike most other Demon Slayers, he is unable to use breath or most sword fighting styles. Instead, he eats some of the demons he fights, and through his special digestive system, he temporarily gains demonic powers. His powers can be greater depending on how strong and how much of the demon he eats. When he eats a part of a demon, he is also sensitive to the latter’s weaknesses. He also carries a pistol that fires specialized bullets made of the same material as the Nichirin swords of Demon Slayers. He is the younger brother of Sanemi Shinazugawa, the current Wind Hashira, who always avoids him, unaware that his older brother wants him to have a normal life. Genya is mortally wounded while assisting the Hashira against Kokushibo, reconciling with his brother before dying.

He can also devour other people’s cells to assimilate their abilities and memories. Muzan was originally a sick young man from the Heian period whose transition into a demon was the result of an experimental treatment to prolong his life, killing his doctor before realizing it worked. He has since dedicated himself to “complete his cure” and become perfect by siring demons that would help him achieve his goal. He also expressed justified concern for those who use the Breath of the Sun technique since his near-death experience fighting Yoriichi Tsugikuni, which motivated him to slaughter Tanjiro’s family as part of an attempt to turn them into demons naturally immune to sunlight. Nezuko, the sole survivor of the incident, eventually manifests this ability, with Muzan focusing his efforts on capturing and devouring her to eliminate his one weakness. But the Demon Slayer Corps exploit Muzan’s obsession to set a trap for him that kills the last followers. Muzan kills Tamayo and numerous Demon Slayers before learning that he has been infected with a variant of the Humanity Restoring Serum Tamayo and Shinobu have developed with additional poisons that take away most of his abilities and destroy him. weaken so that he is easily killed. His body is therefore destroyed by sunlight when he is restrained by the Demon Slayers to prevent him from escaping.
