In Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, a lingering mystery was unexpectedly resolved in the first episode of the Entertainment District Arc.
Tanjiro learned the Hinokami Kagura from his father, who didn’t use it to kill demons, but rather as a snow-based ritual dance.
Tanjiro has used this technique to nearly defeat Rui (who cheated) and to kill Enmu, one of the twelve lesser ranked Kizuki, after recalling it.He also used it to injure High Rank Three Akaza, costing him his sword once more. The main disadvantage of Hinokami Kagura is that Tanjiro cannot move after performing it, so it should only be used as a last resort.
Tanjiro visits the Rengoku family mansion after partially recovering from his injuries sustained at the Battle of the Mugen Train. He plans to convey Kyojuro’s final words to his family there, as well as look through the Flame Breathing historical records for any reference of the Hinokami Kagura. Surprisingly, Kyojuro’s intoxicated father has the solution Tanjiro seeks, though he shares it out of rage rather than a desire to assist. Kyojuro’s father accuses Tanjiro of being a Sun-Breathing carrier after noticing his Hanafuda earrings.
The Hanafuda Earrings are revealed to be a sign of Sun Breathing, which Kyojuro’s father claims is the original and most effective breathing technique. The five main breathing types were known up until this point in the series: Water, Flame, Wind, Stone, and Thunder. Kyojuro’s father, on the other hand, claims that these fashions are just cheap Sun breathing knockoffs. Given that Tanjiro’s father donned the earrings and other comparable clothes when performing the dance, there’s little doubt that the Hinokami Kagura and Sun Breathing are one and the same.
Given that the Sun is all demons’ fatal weakness, it makes sense that the Sun breathing is the most potent breathing method. Hashira had never heard of Hinokami Kagura, and Tanjiro’s father, possibly the last living user, did not utilise it to battle demons. Muzan may recognise Tanjiro’s Hanafuda Loops and want him dead for this reason, as he may also be aware that Sun-Breathers pose a greater threat to demons than practitioners of any other breathing method.
Tanjiro is currently unable to move after utilising the Hinokami Kagura, despite extensive training. He must perfect the most powerful breathing style if he is to vanquish Muzan and discover a way to heal Nezuko. It’ll only be a matter of time before he figures out how to wield the Hinokami Kagura more successfully now that he knows the truth about it. Tanjiro may even exceed the Hashira once he does this.
