Hashira’s Training Arc
At the Butterfly Mansion, after an injured man (who is a demon slayer) broke a window in her room, she was so scared that she ended up hugging and shaking with Naho Takada. The man, who recently lost part below the elbow of one of his arms, was stopped by Genya Shinazugawa before he could throw a vase at the girls in the mansion. After Genya calms the man down, the latter cries apologizing for the loss of his comrade. This makes Sumi and Naho cry too, so Genya decides to go back to sleep in his room.
Later, Sumi brings Genya’s medicine worrying about him. After he wakes up, Sumi tells him that she heard him apologize to his brother while he was sleeping. She thanks him for protecting them back then. When Genya asks about the injured man, she replies that he is now calm and will be sent to the hospital the next day. She says Aoi and Naho came to thank him but he was sleeping.
She asks if the Wind Hashira is her big brother. She clarifies that it is because of their names and their appearance that she believes him. However, she thinks her big brother looks very scary. Without thinking, Genya loudly protests against this assertion. He says his big brother is really nice and reliable. Seeing that Sumi’s eyes are full of compassion, he begins to tell her his story, his family’s story and how he regrets misunderstanding his big brother.
Sumi tells him not to worry about his mistake and that as long as both are alive, there’s always a chance to do it again. After hearing her encouragement, he reflects on his past actions and ends up apologizing once again. After Sumi tells him not to apologize, Tanjiro Kamado wakes up and cheerfully tells him to be grateful. Genya, who was embarrassed, pulls Tanjiro’s cheeks asking if he was awake all along. After Tanjiro clears his doubts, Sumi asks Genya not to be aggressive with injured Tanjiro. After Genya thanks her, she shows him a smile.
After getting out of Genya’s room, she meets Aoi. She tells him how Tanjiro and Genya are doing. She was happy thinking about Genya’s kindness which wasn’t as scary as she thought. She thinks of telling this to Naho and Kiyo. They talk about the Wind Hashira’s visit to the butterfly mansion this morning. Aoi gives him instructions on how to take care of Tanjiro. After Aoi leaves, she thinks Sanemi really came to see if Genya was okay.
She goes to feed a shy Genya with Aoi. After Tanjiro states that Genya gets along with everyone, much to the latter’s chagrin.
She is shown alongside Aoi Kanzaki, Kiyo Terauchi, and Naho Takada tending to Nezuko Kamado in the sunshine around the Butterfly Mansion. After Zenitsu, who arrived first screaming with joy to see Nezuko under the sun, threatens to spit on Inosuke, she hides behind Nezuko showing some concern.

Abilities and Powers
Although she never showed or, in Aoi’s case, hinted at any special abilities, they were the ones who taught Total Concentration: Constant (全ぜん集しゅう中ちゅう・常じょう中ちゅう Zen Shūchū Jōchū?) to Tanjiro, showing that they contain valuable information about breathing styles and training.
Triviality
The name chosen by Sumi contains the characters for “middle” (中 naka?) and “grassland” (原 hara?).
She shares the same name as Sumi Shinazugawa, the younger sister of Genya Shinazugawa and Sanemi Shinazugawa.
Quotes
(To Genya Shinazugawa) “As long as you’re alive, there’s always a chance that you two could start over. You need to reconcile with your brother. »
