Koyoharu Gotouge (born May 5, 1989) is a Japanese manga artist best known for his work on Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (2016-2020). As of February 2021, the manga had sold more than 150 million copies (including digital versions), making it one of the most popular manga series of all time.
Gotoge chooses a bespectacled alligator as his avatar when he spreads the word about the series.

Early life
Koyoharu Gotouge was born in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, on May 5, 1989. The author remains anonymous in public.
Career
Koyoharu Gotouge made his Jump Treasure Newcomer Manga Awards debut in 2013 with the one-shot Kagarigari.
The following three one-shots were Monju Shiro Kyodai (published in Jump Next! in 2014), Rokkotsu-san (published in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2014), and Haeniwa no Zigzag (released in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2015).
After Haeniwa no Zigzag failed, Tatsuhiko Katayama (Gotouge’s first editor) advocated for starting a series with a “simple to understand premise” Kagarigari, Gotouge’s debut novel, will serve as the inspiration for Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. From February 15, 2016, to May 18, 2020, Weekly Shonen Jump published the series. It had sold more than 150 million copies (including the digital versions) as of February 2021, making it one of the most popular manga series of all time.
Gotouge stated in February 2021 that he plans to have the next project as a sci-fi romantic comedy narrative.

Awards and honours
Kodansha will honour Gotouge with the 2nd Noma Publishing Culture Award in 2020, which honours people who have “reinvented publishing.”
The franchise’s sales increased the entire publishing company from 2019 to 2020, earning Gotouge this prize.
In February 2021, Gotouge became the first manga artist to be named to Time’s annual list of the 100 Most Influential People in the “Phenomena” category. Gotouge won the Minister of Education, Sports, Culture, Science, and Technology’s Newcomer Award in March 2021 in the Media Fine Arts category . Gotouge was awarded the Special Prize at the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for the 25th time in 2021.
